QUESTIONS ABOUT OUR TOURS
What equipment do you need on Etna?
The equipment you need on Etna depends on the time of year, the specific weather conditions, and the tour or altitude.
For all medium and difficult hikes, good trekking boots that go above the ankle are necessary. We walk a lot on Etna on rubble and volcanic ash. Small, sharp-edged stones easily fit into low shoes. That is why we recommend long trousers to protect yourself on these tours, even in summer. Alternatively, you can wear long socks and put them over your shoes.
It’s best to dress in layers: lots of layers that can be taken off or put on.
The temperature on Etna at over 2500 meters is about 10-20 degrees colder than on the coast. At 2000 meters it is about 10-15 degrees colder. When it is windy, it can feel really freezing, especially in winter. When the sun is shining, it can be hot in summer even at higher altitudes. The actual perceived temperature can therefore vary greatly and can change quickly from day to day or even within a day.
In summer you need sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses) and at least 1.5 liters of water per person. Even in winter, when there is snow, sunscreen can’t hurt. You will also need a hat, gloves and warm, windproof snow clothing. You will also need a hat, gloves and warm, windproof snow clothing. On Etna it is often windy and the wind brings fine ash, so we recommend sunglasses also to protect yourself from the wind and ash. If possible, you should avoid contact lenses and wear glasses instead.
We would like to visit Etna with our children. What is the right tour?
We are always very happy when children participate in our excursions and can become passionate about nature and the wonders of our planet! Depending on the age of the children and their hiking habits, different tours on Etna are suitable.
- For small children, we recommend the family excursion or the Etna & Alcantara tour.
- The North Craters Tour and the Etna 3000 Tour are moderate excursions and therefore also suitable for children.
- The tour of the main craters is only possible for those aged 12 and over.
