The fascination of Mount Etna
The 3,400-metre high Mount Etna is one of the most active and fascinating volcanoes in the world. Its majestic profile dominates the east of Sicily and harbors thousands of years of eruptions, legends and changes. Its structure is complex: the summit craters are flanked by numerous side vents, pyroclastic cones and caves with lava flows.
Etna is rich in unique paths characterized by very different landscapes: lava flows of dark, hard rock, green forests and fine, light volcanic sand alternate.
The path to the Sartorius mountains is particularly noteworthy: it consists of seven aligned cones created during the lateral eruption of 1865 on the north slope of the volcano, surrounded by a magnificent forest of Betulla Etnea.
The last eruption of the volcano Etna was triggered by a summit crater. The southeastern crater, which has recently been the most vibrant and pulsating of the four main craters, caused a spectacular event on June 2, 2025, characterized by the ejection of ash and volcanic material that formed over 6 km tall columns and new lava flows. This is a clear sign that on Mount Etna every moment writes its own story.
Etna wines: terrain of fire
Wine-growing on Mount Etna is one of the most interesting terroirs in Europe. The continuous volcanic activity has enriched the soil with minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, sulphur and potassium, creating an ideal environment for viticulture. The volcanic ash and lapilli give the soil a light, well-drained structure that allows the roots of the vines to grow deep into the soil. The terroir of Etnean is characterized by very strong temperature fluctuations between day and night, which favors a slow and even ripening of the grapes. Today, the area reserved for the cultivation of Etna DOC extends along the slopes of the volcano between 400 and 1,000 meters, an area that was already established in 1968 by an oenological commission.
The four slopes: microcosms of excellence
Each of the slopes of Mount Etna offers unique characteristics that are reflected in the wines:
North slope: At a higher altitude (800-1,000 meters) there is a cooler climate with pronounced temperature fluctuations. The wines are more elegant and fresh, with pronounced acidity and good shelf life.
Eastern slope: The proximity to the sea, the high rainfall (about 1,500 mm per year) and the strong identity of Carricante characterize this area. Only in the municipality of Milo is the name Etna Bianco Superiore allowed thanks to the unique climatic conditions.
South-west slope: A sunny area with vineyards up to over 1,000 meters altitude and low rainfall. Here the highest temperatures on Mount Etna prevail, ideal for lively, alcoholic and aromatic wines.
South-East Slope: Sunny, with soils derived from ancient eruptions, it is home to high-altitude vineyards that produce complex and balanced wines and benefit from the sea breeze.
The autochthonous grape varieties: unique expressions of the volcano
Etna Rosso
Nerello Mascalese: the most representative variety of Etna, capable of producing wines with elegant structure, good acidity and pronounced minerality. The characteristic notes of red fruits, spices and light smoking reflect the combination of volcanic soil and microclimate.
Nerello Cappuccio: Often accompanied by the Nerello Mascalese in the blends, brings softness and fragrance, with a fruity note that gives the ideal balance between body and freshness.
Etna Bianco
Carricante: Autochthonous variety that matures at high altitudes and develops an amazing acidity and freshness. The minerality of the volcanic soil gives an interesting structure and remarkable longevity with citrus notes, flowers and a spicy aftertaste.
Catarratto: another autochthonous grape variety, recognizable by fruity aromas such as apple, pear, citrus and white flowers with notes of hawthorn and jasmine. Fresh, spicy and dry taste with balanced alcohol content and good acidity.
The vines of Mount Etna are less susceptible to diseases and pests thanks to the light and well draining structure of the soil, which can reduce the use of pesticides. Many farms have embarked on a path towards sustainability, with ecological and biodynamic viticulture that respects the ecosystem. The vineyards, often cultivated in small plots on the steep slopes of the volcano and supported by traditional dry stone walls, require manual care that testifies to a thousand-year connection between people and land.
